Genomics of Pandanus: A useful plant resource o...

The aromatic plant Pandanus tectorius Parkinson (=Pandanus fascicularis Lam.) popularly known as kia or kewda is an important coastal bio-resource that supports the socio-economy as well as ecology of Ganjam coast in Odisha. According to the World Check List of Selected Plant Families (www.theplantlist.org), the accepted name of this plant species is Pandanus odorifer (Forssk.) Kuntze under the genus Pandanus (family: Pandanaceae) having 65 synonyms that included P. fascicularis and P. tectorius. The genome of P. tectorius was analysed on bases of somatic chromosome complement, nuclear 4C DNA content and randomly amplified polymorphic DNA (RAPD) in relation to morphological variation, dioecism, and geographical distribution along the coastline of Odisha stretching a distance of 600 km. RAPD analysis could segregate plants from different populations on the basis of morphology, sex or locations. A few male-specific RAPD markers in plants specific to Gajam coast were identified. The findings pointed to the possible role of eco-geography augmenting micro-evolution of male plant genotypes of P. tectorius at Ganjam coast, Odisha that are known for high perfume quality and yield.

A Structural Perspective on Respiratory Complex I
192,59 € *
ggf. zzgl. Versand

Complex I (NADH:ubiquinone oxidoreductase) is the first and largest enzyme of the respiratory chain in mitochondria and plays a central role in cellular energy production. Complex I dysfunction has been implicated in many human neurodegenerative diseases, including Parkinson s. Mutations in complex I subunits are among the most common human genetic disorders known. Until recently, in the absence of structural information, complex I was the least understood enzyme of the respiratory chain. The mechanism by which it couples electron transfer between NADH and quinone to the translocation of protons across the membrane was a complete enigma.Recent years have been marked by spectacular progress in the elucidation of complex I s structure, finally allowing the interpretation of a wealth of data accumulated in about 50 years since the discovery of the enzyme. Understanding of the mechanism of this large molecular machine, involving long-range conformational changes, is beginning to emerge. This book is the first devoted entirely to complex I. It contains chapters written by leaders in the field, covering a wide range of topics from the structure of the complex, properties of its many redox centers, subunit composition, mutagenesis studies, evolution of the enzyme and on to the current understanding of the coupling mechanism and the molecular basis for human pathologies. Features:- Concise and authoritative review of current state-of-the-art in research on respiratory complex I- The first book entirely devoted to complex I, a central enzyme in bioenergetics- Recent breakthroughs in structure elucidation finally allow understanding of the mechanism- Mutations leading to common and severe human disorders are discussed. The book contains chapters written by leaders in the research on the structure and function of respiratory complex I. It will provide a concise and authoritative summary of the current knowledge on complex I of respiratory chains. This enzyme is central to energy metabolism and is implicated in many human neurodegenerative diseases, as well as in aging. Until recently it was poorly understood on a structural level, and this book will provide a timely reference resource. Such a book was not published previously. The last time a minireview series on complex I were published was in 2001, and since then complex I field changed quite dramatically.

This book provides an in-depth review of the insula, with emphasis on anatomical, diagnostics, clinical, and surgical features. The insular cortex is involved in a variety of functions, but a comprehensive resource cataloging these functions is not available in the current literature. This book gathers highly informative chapters written and edited by leading international authorities in the field and covers the full range of the insular cortex, approaching it in four main sections: firstly, the embryology and anatomy of the human insula; secondly, the functions of the human insula, including its role in nociception, language, decision making, cognition, emotional awareness etc.; thirdly, clinical disorders related to the insula such as epilepsy, schizophrenia, and Parkinson’s disease; and fourthly, surgical techniques for insular gliomas and temporal lobe epilepsy. This comprehensive reference book will be an ideal source for neurosurgeons, neurologists and neuroanatomists seeking both basic and more advanced information regarding this unique structure in the human brain.
